Compost bins are easy build and will provide you with nutrient rich fertilizer that you can use in your garden. Through the process of decomposition, waste materials such as leaves, grass clippings and various household items will naturally break down. By placing these materials in a container or bin and "turning" them throughout the year, you will end up with a natural fertilizer that your plants will love. By adding worms to your compost heap you can help speed the process along.
Items such as fruits and vegetables, coffee grounds and filters, nut and egg shells, shredded newspapers and fireplace ash are great materials to add to your compost pile. Check out the links in the resources section below for further information on what materials are safe to put to your compost pile, as there are some that you do not want to add.
While you can purchase a compost bin they are relatively easy to make. If you wish to construct your own you will need the following items.
To begin you will need to drill five holes in the lid and base of the trash can. Next drill approximately 15 holes along the sides of the trash can. Once you have finished drilling the holes you can then attach your trash can to the wooden base that you have constructed. The base needn't be anything more than an elevate platform to raise your compost bin off the ground with. If you have a pallet or other suitable item lying around you can use that. Regardless, be sure to not cover the holes that you have drilled in your trash can when you attach the base.
You now have your very own compost bin and can begin adding waste material to it. You will need to "turn" the compost pile every week or two. This can be accomplished by using a pitchfork or shovel to move the material around. After several months you should start to see the compost material breakdown and produce a dark, rich soil.
