The first thing you should do before starting any outdoor project that involves serious digging is to call your local utility company. They will come out to your home and mark any underground utilities such as gas, electric or water lines.

Provided that you already have a blueprint or rough sketch of the pond you wish to build, the next step is to mark the area where you will be digging. Use spray paint to create an outline and then start digging.
